On Thursday, May 31, Stokes 5th graders got to cross Niagara Falls off their bucket lists.

The trip started with a ride on the iconic Maid of the Mist where students grabbed a poncho and started their trek to get up close and personal with the falls. According to the website, the Maid of the Mist is the only boat fleet that has “safely navigated the mighty waters of the Niagara Gorge for over 100 years, taking tens of millions of visitors directly into the center of the swirling mist.”

After getting splashed by the mist of the falls, the 5th graders had a picnic in Niagara Falls State Park. The park provided slightly better views than the school’s cafeteria.

Students had free time with their chaperones to hop on the trolley and explore the attractions. Options included the Aquarium of Niagara, Niagara Gorge Discovery Center, and Niagara: Legends of Adventure Theater. Whether they hung out with the penguins in the aquarium, experienced some history in the theater or rock climbed in the discovery center, students were sure to have a memorable time.

Following exploration time, everyone met up to travel into the Cave of the Winds. Plummeting 175 feet into the Niagara Gorge, the Cave of the Winds allowed students to get even closer to the action than the Maid of the Mist. After snagging a poncho and some sandals, they took the walkways to the “Hurricane Deck” which led directly underneath Bridal Veil Falls. Many students huddled together and got drenched by the rushing water.

Last stop was dinner at the famous Hard Rock Café. Students and chaperones reminisced about their fun-filled day while eating delicious food and listening to good music.

It’s not easy to coordinate big trips like this one. Thank you to all chaperones who volunteered their time, 5th-grade teachers Mrs. Keating, Mrs. Cardarelli, and Mrs. Sgroi, Principal Mrs. Miller and everyone who participated in the fundraisers that helped support this unforgettable trip.
